Praying the Word of God Over Your Life

I grew up in church learning bible verses, songs and how to pray. The Lord’s prayer was the first prayer I learned to pray. It was not until my early 30’s when I learned that you could pray the scriptures over your life. Hebrews 4:12a says, “For the word of God is alive and active.” The word of God being alive and active is something that I had to learn to believe about prayer. Since God’s word is alive and active, if I pray the scriptures over my life would I see the manifestation of God?

I attended a church where the minister always prayed scripture. She would pray scriptures aloud over our church and sprinkle in a few thanks and requests. I thought it was odd that she prayed scripture because I was taught that prayer was a conversation with God and you had to find the words. It had never dawned on me to pray from the very Bible that I had been reading my whole life. This minister was challenging my basic understanding of prayer.

My understanding of prayer has continued to be expanded. When I joined my new church a couple of years ago, the pastor consistently talked about praying the Word of God over your life. I was still hesitant to do so because he expressed that you needed to identify various areas of your life and find an accompanying scripture to pray over that area. He even provided us with templates on how to pray the Word of God over our life with the accompanying scriptures that the prayer was created from.

So in the fall of 2019, I decided to write scriptures for 9 areas of my life and commit to praying them at least once a week.  The 9 areas I chose were faith, marriage, family, finances, career, health, sisterhood, friends and myself.  

I will share a few scriptures that I prayed over myself and my children:

My daughter: Psalm 139:14a I will praise thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. There are times when my daughter says,” Mom, I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” When she says it, I stand in awe of God because she is starting to understand that God made her to be the special person that she is.

My son: Matthew 6:33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you. My son has added Mark 11:23 “Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea, and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.” I realize that my son believes in God, knows who God is and that God is at the center of his life.

Myself: Proverbs 31:26 She opens her mouth with wisdom and in her tongue is the law of kindness. It is my role to ensure that when I offer advice to people that the answers are truly from God and not from myself.

Praying the Word of God, and the scriptures over my life have really changed the way that I view prayer.
